Eveline Bartowski Eveline is an applied microbiologist with Lallemand, conducting research and winery trials, and translating current research into practical value for the industry. She has had a long and distinguished career managing the malolactic fermentation and wine research program at the AWRI. She has published over 80 papers including book chapters, journal articles and technical papers and is an Associate Editor for the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine research.
Kym Chalmers Kim Chalmers began her career in music composition but returned to her viticulture roots in 2005. Kim manages wine operations at Chalmers, making wines from heat and drought tolerant southern-Italian grape varieties. In 2006, Kim trained with Al Gore as a Climate Project presenter and continues working to educate and prepare Australian winegrowers for climate change, while improving wine quality, through adoption of alternative varieties. In 2012 Kim travelled to Southern Italy on an Agrifood Skills International Fellowship researching indigenous grape varieties and viticultural techniques and their potential application in Australia. The Chalmers Family were awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine’s 2014 Viticulturist of the Year for their collective contribution to the wine industry, particularly Italian varieties in Australia. Kim is currently Chair of the Victorian Government’s Wine Ministerial Advisory Committee and Brand/Projects Manager of the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show.
Bryan Currie Bryan has strongly promoted the adoption of grape varieties that are suited to their regional climate. He led the first planting of southern Italian varieties in the Riverina, NSW, such as Nero d’Avola, Aglianico and Montepulciano wines, which have now enjoyed critical acclaim both nationally and internationally. Bryan has been heavily involved in regional and state based industry organisations such as the NSW Wine Industry Association, Riverina Winemakers Association, MIA Vine Improvement Association and National Grape and Wine Industry Centre. Keen to further knowledge, education and mentoring opportunities, he established the Riverina Sweet Wine Tutorials, and was key in developing the Riverina, Hilltops and Tumbarumba regional wine shows and the International Sweet Wine Challenge. Bryan is also a regular judge on the Australian Wine Show circuit
Heather Fraser Heather started working in the Yalumba laboratory in 1999, and has moved from strength to strength ever since. Heather studied at Charles Sturt University in 2000 and quickly moved into the Yalumba Trainee Winemaker programme later that year. It wasn’t long before Heather was working in our cellar in 2001, then production, completing her degree in 2003.The role of Assistant Winemaker was the natural progression, and so in 2004 Heather was given the opportunity to research projects and the responsibility of the white 2L varietals plus Hill-Smith family’s Oxford Landing Estate wines. Over the next few years, Heather took over the role of Winemaker with full responsibility of white 2L varietals as Cellar Production Co-ordinator. Since 2008 Heather’s star has continued to rise and she has recently taken responsibility for our Organic collection, as well as all red wine production and international bulk sales.
Duncan Hamm Duncan is based in Melbourne, where he works for the Bio-Science company Chr. Hansen.Working for Chr. Hansen in various oenological roles for over ten years, both in Australia and overseas, Duncan is currently the Asia-Pacific Technical Manager for Wine & Fermented Beverages. This experience and exposure brings a deep understanding of both the scientific and practical aspects at play within wine fermentation. Prior to this, Duncan had first-hand winemaking experience after completing a Grad. Dip in Viticulture & Oenology (Distinction) at Lincoln University, NZ. More recently Duncan has completed the AWAC and has moved into the area of wine judging.
David Wollan David graduated from the Wine Science course in Wagga Wagga in 1979. From 1979 he spent 4 years as winemaker at Arrowfield Wines in the Hunter Valley before moving to the Yarra Valley to establish Tarrawarra Vineyard. He managed it and was chief winemaker for 12 years. In the early 1990s, he formed the company Wine File to develop a PC based winery management system. In 1994, with colleague Gary Baldwin, David established Wine Network, where, as a director and consultant, he spent a number of years advising wineries in Australia and elsewhere concentrating on the development and application of membrane separation technologies. David invented processes for smoke taint removal and alcohol reduction and is currently pursuing a master’s degree by research at the University of Adelaide. David is the current ASVO Regional Director for Victoria.
